Planning Division - For Business Department Home

GETTING STARTED
If you are opening a new business or are relocating to Petaluma, check out our Starting Business Guide for other helpful reminders and resources.

ZONING CLEARANCE
The Planning Department oversees how land and buildings are used. For businesses, that means that the Planning Department must approve your business location before you can get a Business Certificate and occupy your space. The complexity of this process depends on your business and the location you select. To make it easier, we have planners available during business hours to walk you through the process. Come talk to us in person at 11 English Street, Petaluma, CA 94952 or discuss your business needs with a planner on the phone or by email at 707-778-4470 or petalumaplanning@ci.petaluma.ca.us.

CITY TEAM CAN HELP
Petaluma has also appointed a special team of staff to help your business navigate other requirements related to the City’s General Plan, Fire Safety, Occupancy and Accessibility Requirements, Waste Water Procedures, Transportation and Law Enforcement. The team meets weekly and can help you get a better understanding of your requirements. To meet with the team, call or email at a planner 707-778-4470 or petalumaplanning@ci.petaluma.ca.us. Click here to see who is on the team.

OPEN COUNTER - NEW ONLINE PERMIT TOOL
Petaluma’s online permit tool can help you identify which permits you will need and how much those permits will cost.  The tool is interactive and works by walking you through a series of questions that will then identify which permits you project will trigger and how much those permits will cost.  The tool is available 24/7 and can provide instant information.
