Community Trees
The City does have various Policies and Ordinances regarding tree preservation, maintenance, and/or removal, depending upon the type, location, and condition of the tree.
Tree Maintenance
and/or Removal
The City requires an Encroachment Permit to trim and/or remove trees in the public right-of-way (usually trees in the planter strip between the curb and sidewalk). See #1 in the sketch below. Tree trim/removal permits are available from the Community Development Department. Trees in locations such as #2 in the sketch below are the property owner's responsibility but do not require a permit for trimming or removal.
Curbside Trees
Heritage Tree Ordinance
The City has a Heritage Tree Ordinance, and invites property owners to nominate their tree(s) to the register, so that they can be protected from removal.
Heritage/Landmark Tree Designation Permit
Open letter to tree owners from the Tree Advisory Committee.
