Beneficial Wetlands

Creation of Beneficial Wetlands

The City will be creating about 30 acres of polishing wetlands as part of the Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility. The City will also be converting the facility’s two southern oxidation ponds to treatment wetlands. The wetlands provide a low-cost way to treat the community’s wastewater, while simultaneously functioning as a quality wildlife sanctuary, with public access, as is done at the successful and popular Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary.  Grant funding secured in support of the project will provide for construction of walking trails from the Petaluma River dredge reclamation ponds at Shollenberger Park to the new wetlands and will create new trails to the Petaluma River. With these changes, the public will have access to about 230 acres of wetlands and wildlife sanctuary.
